"VERTUS B. MATHERS DIES IN CALIFORNIA

Vertus B. Mathers, son of George Mathers, died Tuesday, December 24, 1957 in a hospital in Wilmington, Calif., after a major operation. He is survived by his wife; a son, George H. Mathers of Long Beach; two daughters, Helen Murehism and Marion Coyle, of Wilmington; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren and his step mother, Mrs. George B. Mathers of Mason City, Illinois. Mr. Mathers is related to the Caven family of this place."

"John Hill Service Set at Fletcher

FLETCHER - John A. Hill, 87, a retired Miami County farmer, died at 8:10 p.m. Saturday in Piqua Memorial Hospital after a seven-week illness. He was a native of Springcreek Township in Miami, born Nov. 6, 1876, to Willis S. and Alice Ann Caven Hill. He was married June 9, 1904 to Victoria Carey, who died in 1965. Mr. Hill was a graduate of Piqua High School and Miami Jacobs Business College, Dayton. He was a member of Newton Presbyterian Church here. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Marshall of Detroit; two sons, William and Richard, both of R. R. 2, Piqua; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Scholl of Connorsville, Ind. and Mrs. Bert (Martha) Duer of Glendale, Ariz., and a brother, Leonard Hill of R. R. 2, Piqua. Dr. Joe Hendrix will conduct services at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Suber Funeral Home her with burial in Fletcher Cemetery."

Obit: Hill was a well known local historian and genealogist and had written several books on local and area history ("Miami County Historty: 1807-1953", and a compilation of his newspaper articles: "Local and Regional History: 1947-1970"). A member os many historical societies and helped interest in forming the Col John Joston Farm. Was one of the organizers of Pioneer Rural Electric Cooperative. Pres of the Springcreek Board of Education for the first 8 yrs of its consolidation, 1922-30. Member and elder of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church. Born and lived in the same home all his life (9925 N Fairview Rd, Miami Co.)

A past President of the Miami Co. Historical Society. He edited "A History of Miami County, Ohio (1807-1953)" published in 1953.

349. Louise Hill

Retired office worker; never married. Helped her father compile the first "George and Elizabeth Caven of Miami County Genealogical Record" in 1975. This was updated in 1989 by William King of Peoria, IL. Was moved to a nursing home in Marietta later in life (after 1984) to be near her brother George where she died in 1989.
