Mary Estey tombstone "hanged"

402. Mary¹⁰ Towne (William¹¹) was born ca 1634. She was age 58 at death Mary died September 22, 1692 in Salem, MA, at age 58.

She married Isaac Estey. Isaac was born before 1630 in England. Isaac⁽³⁹⁷⁾ was the son of Jeffrey Estey. Isaac died 1712 in Massachusetts, at age 82. Isaac was employed. He was baptized August 24, 1634 in Yarmouth, England. (See Isaac Estey for the children resulting from this marriage.) Mary and her sister Rebecca were among those accused at the Salem Witchcraft Trials and put to death by hanging on Gallows Hill. From her prison cell, she wrote:

"...seeing we are unable to plead our own cause, nor is counsel allowed to those in our condition...you who are our judges...please be of counsel to us...direct us where in we may stand in need. We are not conscious to ourselves of any guilt in the least degree of that crime whereof we are now accused...nor of any other scandalous evil, or miscarriage inconsistent with Christianity."
