Francis Edwin Chawner

Francis Edwin Chawner (b 1858) came up from Derby to Kensington, London to work in the office of a solicitor. He was taken in as a lodger by Hannah Beauchamp and introduced to her niece Susannah Painter who was nine years his senior. Hannah Beauchamp probably thought that Frank would be a good catch for her niece. Francis and Susannah were married in Kensington in 1877. There were five children

Francis had what would now be referred to as an alcohol dependency. Money was short and the family had to move quite frequently. Frank would go on "benders" from time to time but his employer seems to have been generous and forgiving and Susie persuaded his employer to take Frank back.

After the death of Hannah Beauchamp in 1897 Frank and Susie had to move from Kensington to less expensive accommodation and took up residency of 41 Myrtle Road, Acton, Middlesex. Money was short and Susie had to take in lodgers to help ends meet and she relied on relations to help her out in times of difficulty.

Susannah died in 1901 aged 51 a few months before that year’s census. It was now the turn of Frank's daughters to deal with their father’s heavy drinking.

Frank died in Fulham in 1906 aged 48 and was buried.in Hammersmith Old Cemetery, Margravine Road, Hammersmith, Middlesex.
