Notes |
- Though he grew up on the family farm near Silver Creek, he spent his senior year of high school at Westfield Academy and Public School, a year that he said he enjoyed much more than all his years at Silver Creek's High School.
After graduation, he had been attending US Naval Reserves meetings. When he received his Draft Notice during the Korean War, he immediately went to the recruiter and requested active duty status, choosing the Aviation division. After being exposed to the nine different disciplines making up the USN's Aviation division, he chose Meteorology, and attended Meteorology school in New Jersey.
Upon graduation from his training he chose Key West as his duty assignment. During those times, Key West was mostly Navy, and Miami was many hours away. Though they were not supposed to, he and fellow sailors would visit Havana when time permitted.
