    • Military: 4 Nov 1952, Key West, Florida, United States; US Navy, Aerographer's Mate (meteorology); Address:
      US Naval Air Station

    Notes:

Though he grew up on the family farm near Silver Creek, he spent his senior year of high school at Westfield Academy and Public School, a year that he said he enjoyed much more than all his years at Silver Creek's High School.

After graduation, he had been attending US Naval Reserves meetings. When he received his Draft Notice during the Korean War, he immediately went to the recruiter and requested active duty status, choosing the Aviation division. After being exposed to the nine different disciplines making up the USN's Aviation division, he chose Meteorology, and attended Meteorology school in New Jersey.

Upon graduation from his training he chose Key West as his duty assignment. During those times, Key West was mostly Navy, and Miami was many hours away. Though they were not supposed to, he and fellow sailors would visit Havana when time permitted.

    Military:
He had served in the US Naval Reserve starting in his senior year of high school. When the selective service draft was inducting more eligible men during the Korean War he voluntarily entered service 4 November 1952 in Bainbridge, Maryland. He started, generally, in the airman unit and eventually chose to be an Aerographer's Mate (meteorologist or weatherman). After serving most of his duty at the US Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida his enlistment ran out on 10 September 1954, when he was honorably discharged. His DD-214 separation document notes that his date of birth was 24 October 1932 in Silver Creek, NY. Height 6 feet, weight 172 pounds, brown hair and eyes.

Robert married Martha June Post on 5 Feb 1957 in Daytona Beach, Volusia County, Florida, and was divorced in 1992 in Titusville, Brevard, Florida, United States. Notes:

Although born Harold, he received a name change to Harry Robert Bradley at the time he entered military service. The name Harry appears on his marriage license in 1922.

His daughter Ada says that he recounted the time when, after working in the fields all morning, he and his siblings came in for lunch. Upon arriving, they noticed a woman at the table whomthey did not recognize. As everyone was seated, Harry's father introduced her as "your sister Alice". That was the first time they had ever met their half-sister.

According to his son: Harry, Mildred and the children lived on the farm, but the 43 acres did not produce much income. During World War II Harry took a job at the Curtiss Aircraft plant in Buffalo making the P-38 aircraft.

The family sold the farm and moved to town (Silver Creek). After 3-4 years (and after the war, around 1947) Harry bought land in Westfield NY and built a tractor garage and subsequently a farm tractor dealership.

Harry and Mildred always enjoyed going to diners. About 1949 Harry discovered a diner in Jamestown that was being auctioned; he placed the winning bid and had the diner moved to his Westfield property. Harry, Mildred, and son Robert ran the diner for some years, selling the Beacon Diner about 20 years later.

The diner, dealership, and their mobile home were located at 8300 W Main Street, Westfield NY (lat/lon: 42.310196,-79.598667).

Harry served in the US Navy during World War I, being in the Aviation division working on the Curtiss NC-4 flying boat, mostly in Pensacola Florida but also at Rockaway Beach and Newport News.

    Census:
valued household at 3,000; showed Harry had -0- income in 1939 from wages, but also had income from another source (farm).

Harold married Mildred Ada Krueger on 21 Jun 1922 in Buffalo, Erie, New York, United States. Mildred (daughter of George R. Krueger and Anna Laura Anderson) was born on 12 Sep 1898 in Dunkirk, New York; died on 18 Feb 1985 in Hanover Township, Chautauqua, New York, United States. [Group Sheet]

  2. 25.  Mildred Ada KruegerMildred Ada Krueger was born on 12 Sep 1898 in Dunkirk, New York (daughter of George R. Krueger and Anna Laura Anderson); died on 18 Feb 1985 in Hanover Township, Chautauqua, New York, United States.

    Notes:

Oddly, his Florida driver license issued in 1976 shows his date of birth as May 2 1902, rather than 1905. His court-recognized Registration of Birth dated December 8 1941 states clearly his date of birth as May 2, 1905, and this is the date found in all family records.

In a "man on the street" piece in a New Smyrna Beach FL newspaper, the topic was "Should we resume diplomatic relations with Cuba?", Charles is quoted as replying "Yes. If we did so then Cuba would cuddle right up to us and would never be a threat. In fact, Cuba should have become a State long before Hawaii way out there. It has good tobacco and sugar for us, among other things."
The quote was accompanied by a photograph of Charles, cigar in mouth.

Charles married Lucinda May Catherwood on 3 Sep 1927 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. Lucinda (daughter of Anderson Cunningham Catherwood and Martha Salter) was born on 28 Mar 1906 in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, England; died on 5 Aug 2001 in Titusville, Brevard, FL; was buried on 8 Aug 2001 in Brevard Memorial Park, Sharpes, Cocoa, Brevard Co., FL. Notes:

During a visit on her 92nd birthday, she recalled some childhood memories:

"We came to this country when I was just three years old, and I remember falling down the gangway when we arrived."

"When I was a little girl, I remember skipping along the sidewalk and tripping over something and really hurting my knee. But I didn't want to tell my mother, because I was afraid she would really get mad. When I got home, she looked at my knee and asked what happened, and I said 'nothing', but my knee kept swelling and getting worse and worse. Finally my dad had to take me to the doctor."

When younger she was called Lucy, and went by Lou later in life.

    Census:
She is listed as age 13, with a birthplace of England; father's birthplace of Ireland; mother's birthplace of England. Eight siblings are shown. Film number 1821371, sheet number 17.
