    Notes:

Although born Harold, he received a name change to Harry Robert Bradley at the time he entered military service. The name Harry appears on his marriage license in 1922.

His daughter Ada says that he recounted the time when, after working in the fields all morning, he and his siblings came in for lunch. Upon arriving, they noticed a woman at the table whomthey did not recognize. As everyone was seated, Harry's father introduced her as "your sister Alice". That was the first time they had ever met their half-sister.

According to his son: Harry, Mildred and the children lived on the farm, but the 43 acres did not produce much income. During World War II Harry took a job at the Curtiss Aircraft plant in Buffalo making the P-38 aircraft.

The family sold the farm and moved to town (Silver Creek). After 3-4 years (and after the war, around 1947) Harry bought land in Westfield NY and built a tractor garage and subsequently a farm tractor dealership.

Harry and Mildred always enjoyed going to diners. About 1949 Harry discovered a diner in Jamestown that was being auctioned; he placed the winning bid and had the diner moved to his Westfield property. Harry, Mildred, and son Robert ran the diner for some years, selling the Beacon Diner about 20 years later.

The diner, dealership, and their mobile home were located at 8300 W Main Street, Westfield NY (lat/lon: 42.310196,-79.598667).

Harry served in the US Navy during World War I, being in the Aviation division working on the Curtiss NC-4 flying boat, mostly in Pensacola Florida but also at Rockaway Beach and Newport News.

    Census:
valued household at 3,000; showed Harry had -0- income in 1939 from wages, but also had income from another source (farm).

Harold married Mildred Ada Krueger on 21 Jun 1922 in Buffalo, Erie, New York, United States. Mildred (daughter of George R. Krueger and Anna Laura Anderson) was born on 12 Sep 1898 in Dunkirk, New York; died on 18 Feb 1985 in Hanover Township, Chautauqua, New York, United States. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

He was a farmer, and was remembered as being frugal, but not tight, and as a stern man. He believed in being a good provider, and in the value of owning real estate. His children would only be allowed to go to school when there was no work on the farm. He never had electricity or indoor running water, though he eventually did get gas lighting.

It was common for men to come to the farm looking for a place to sleep for the night, or for some work. He would not refuse a man sleeping quarters in the barn, but would only hire men with narrow hips (apparently, he believed they would not be lazy and would work hard).

    Birth:
Some sources say he was born in the town of Pomfret. A newspaper item after his death states Dunkirk.

    Notes:

From the 1891 book Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Chautauqua County, New York by Obed Edsen [written and published while James was still alive]:

JAMES WILSON was born November 24, 1806, in Scotland and is a son of William and Margaret (Reid) Wilson. His grandfather James Wilson was also a native of Scotland, of plebeian birth, where he passed his life and died. His grandfather on the maternal side was like-wise a Scotchman and a merchant by occupation. He died in his native land. William Wilson, father of James Wilson, was born in Scotland, and died in 1832.

The son, James Wilson, received what education he has in the schools of his native country and in 1827 he bid adieu to his Scottish home and sailed for America. He first took up his residence in the town of Hanover, New York, near Silver Creek, an uncle, John Reid, who died March 16, 1837, and himself settling upon the farm where he still lives. Here they built a cabin in the midst of dense woods and began to clear the tract of land upon which they had settled. The present condition of his farm is in a great measure due to his own efforts and untiring energy.

James Wilson was thrice married ; first, to Philena Davison, by whom he had twelve children. His second wife was Harriet Flint, upon whose death, he again married, Mrs. Matilda (Toney)Johnson. His surviving children are Margaret, wife of S. L. Mead, a resident of near Forestville, Chautauqua county, New York; Henry, a farmer by occupation, living with his father ; and Mary C, wife of Robert O. Bradley, a farmer living near Silver Creek.

James Wilson has always followed the vocation of farming, and, as such, has been very successful, gathering about him considerable real and personal property. He is a thorough-going republican in his political allegiance and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He was formerly a member of the I. O. O. F. in good standing, but has allowed his membership to lapse. Mr. Wilson enjoys the respect and good will of his neighbors.

James married Philena Bailey Davison in 1831. Philena (daughter of Henry Davison and Sarah Estey) was born on 12 Sep 1814 in Readsboro, Bennington, Vermont, United States; died on 7 Aug 1868 in Silver Creek, Chautauqua, New York, United States; was buried in 1868 in Hanover Center, Chautauqua, New York, United States. Notes:

Rudolph served in the U.S. Civil War. He enlisted for three years at Otto, NY in the 64th N.Y.V.I. (also known as the Cattaraugus Regiment), Company C, on September 16, 1861 at age 19. He re-enlisted on January 19, 1864.

Among the battles in which the 64th served were: Yorktown; Fair Oaks; Gaines' Mills; Antietam; Fredericksburg; Chancellorsville; Gettysburg; Spottsylvania; and Petersburg (according to the NY Adjutant General's Report, 1868).

On May 5 1864 he was wounded at the Battle of Wilderness, Virginia (Spotsylvania County), part of Grant’s Overland Campaign (for this gunshot wound to the left leg he ultimately received a pension of $2 per month).

The principal commanders in the battle of Wilderness were Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and Maj. Gen. George G. Meade for the USA and Gen. Robert E. Lee for the Confederacy. Losses were heavy:5597 Killed, 21463 Wounded, and 10667 Missing or Captured from the USA, and 2000 Killed, 6000 Wounded, and 3400 Missing or Captured from the CSA. There were 162,920 total troops engaged (USA101,895; CSA 61,025).

On the morning of May 5, 1864, the Union V Corps attacked Ewell’s Corps on the Orange Turnpike, while A.P. Hill’s corps during the afternoon encountered Getty’s Division (VI Corps) and Hancock’s II Corps on the Plank Road. Fighting was fierce but inconclusive as both sides attempted to maneuver in the dense woods. Darkness halted the fighting, and both sides rushed forwardreinforcements. At dawn on May 6, Hancock attacked along the Plank Road, driving Hill’s Corps back in confusion. Longstreet’s Corps arrived in time to prevent the collapse of the Confederate right flank. At noon, a devastating Confederate flank attack in Hamilton’s Thicket sputtered out when Lt. Gen. James Longstreet was wounded by his own men. The IX Corps (Burnside) moved against the Confederate center, but was repulsed. The battle was a tactical draw. Grant, however, did not retreat as had the other Union generals before him. On May 7, the Federals advanced by the left flank toward the crossroads of Spotsylvania Courthouse.

On September 22 1864 he was transferred to Company A, and promoted to Corporal on October 10 of that year. He was further promoted to First Sergeant on January 7 1865, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on July 11 1865 (date of rank May 27, 1865). Three days later (July 14) he was mustered out of service at Washington.
