COUNTY MAYO RECORDS
Below is an extract of a report I received from a genealogical researcher at Dublin University, Ireland.
Primary Valuation
The Primary Valuation was a nationwide survey of property holdings taken between 1848-1864. It records the name of the occupant of the holding, his landlord, the type of holding (house, land, office, garden, yard) as well as the size and value of the holding. Belmullet was a town and Catholic parish in the civil parish of Kilcommon.
Doona
Anthony Lenaghan (Lacky) leased a house, offices and land from Rev. Archer Clive for 3 pounds 6s.
Anthony Lenaghan (Black) leased a house, offices and land from Rev. Archer Clive for 2 pounds 11s.
Anthony Lenaghan (Patt) leased a house, offices and land from Rev. Archer Clive for 1 pound 13s.
All three men also leased plots of land from the same landlord in the townland. The three Anthony Lenaghans were distinguished by the names Lacky, Patt and Black; these indicate that they were three different people, and were probably nicknames used locally.
Cancellation Books
The Cancellation Books were taken from the Primary Valuation and updated almost annually to record any changes in the occupancy of ownership of the land holdings.
Knockmoyleen
Anthony Lenaghan leased a cottage and land from Alick Richy for 6 pounds 4s.
By 1861 the holding had passed to Peter Doherty.
By 1863 the holding had passed to William Palmer.
Doona
Anthony Lenaghan (Patt ):
By 1864 this holding had gone and Anthony Lenaghan Patt did not reappear until 1880.
By 1880 Anthony Lenaghan Patt took over a holding from Andrew Lenaghan Patt.
By 1891 Anthony Lenaghan Patt passed his holding to John Lenaghan Lacky.
By 1909 Anthony Lenaghan Patt took over a holding from Pat Lenaghan Patt.
Anthony Lenaghan (Lacky):
In 1867 Anthony Lenaghan Lacky passed his holding to Edward Campbell and took over the holding of John Keane.
Between 1869-1970 Anthony Lenaghan Lacky passed his holding on to a Mr. Thomas, and the next year it is passed back to Anthony Lenaghan Lacky.
1895 Anthony Lenaghan Lacky passed his holding to Bartholomew Lenaghan.
Anthony Lenaghan Lacky is not recorded in the townland after 1895. It is very likely that he died at this time.
Anthony Lenaghan (Black):
In 1875 Anthony Lenaghan Black passed his holding on to Judith Lenaghan (probably his wife).
Between 1878-1882 the holding passed back and forth between Judith Lenaghan and James Ginty. By 1882 it is left to James Ginty.
Tithe Applotment Books
The Tithe Applotment was a nationwide survey of rural holdings similar to the
Primary Valuation, taken between 1823-1832. They were compiled in order to
assess to amount of religious tax (tithe) was payable by each household for the
upkeep of the established church, the Church of Ireland. The Tithe Applotment
Books for Kilcommen were dated January 1834.
In the Tithe Books the townland of Doona was divided into five sections: Doona Cormack, Doona Sweeny, Doona Campbell, Doona Hora and Doona Lenaghan. I found the Lenaghan family in the section Doona Lenaghan.
Patt Lenaghan, Fiad Lenaghan, Daniel McMannion, Owen Gallagher and Co. all leased 25 acres as a real acreable value of 20 pounds 2s.
Belmullet Parish Register
I searched the Belmullet Catholic parish register for records of the two
marriages of Anthony Lenaghan as well as the baptisms of his children. I only
found a record of the baptism of his first daughter, Mary Margaret, which told
us the maiden name of his first wife.
14th December 1857 Mary daughter of
Anthony Lenaghan and Margaret Lally. The Godparents were Anthony Danghan and
Mary Lally.
There were no marriage records in the register between 1846-1857, so I was
unable to find a record of the marriage of Anthony Lenaghan and Margaret Lally.
I was also unable to find a record of Anthony’s second marriage to Anne Murray
and baptism of their children. Marriages usually occurred in the brides parish,
so if Anne Murray was from a different parish it is likely that that is where
they married. Anthony Lenaghan may even have moved from Belmullet before he
married. If this was the case then I would suggest that he was the same man as
the Anthony Lenaghan from the townland of Knockmoyleen, who left his holding in
1861.
