- Jacob was born near Overton in Cooper County Missouri. His parentsdied
young. He was raised in the household of his grandparents, Jacob and
Priscilla Chism. In 1835, he migrated with his grandparents to Morgan
County Missouri. During the Civil War, he served as a Confederatesoldier
from Morgan County Missouri. When his brother did not return from theWar,
he married his brother's wife, Lucy (Brown) Letchworth.
