Notes
- Clara Pauleine (Spurlock) Steinbruck tells us her great grandfatherwas
John Langdon Chism, son of Jacob and Priscilla (Howard) Chism. Jacoband
Priscella were early settlers in Missouri coming from Kentucky. Theywere
farmers and he was a Baptist minister. Their farm was west ofVersailles,
Missouri and there was a family cemetery on their land, both Jacob and
Priscilla were buried in this cemetery. The cemetery was laterdestroyed
and the stones from their graves were found thrown in a hollow, thepieces
of these stones were later put into a momument at the VersaillesCemetery
in their memory.
When my mother and dad, Grace Darling (Clifton) Spurlock and PaulOliver
Spurlock, lived in Topeka, Kansas they sent money back to have thecemetery
fenced, so that it would be saved and not destroyed. The man took the
money and never fenced the cemetery.
My great grandfather, John Langdon lived on the Jacob Chism farm. My
mother was born on the farm. When my parents returned from living in
Topeka, they bought a farm about five miles from the family homestead.
This is were I grew up during my childhood.
My grandparents were Samuel Pennebaker Clifton and Frances Grace(Chism)
Clifton. My grandmother died when my mother was 13 years old. Shedied
of what they termed "brain fever".
I retired in 1991 after 32 years of employment. Twenty-two of thoseyears
were at Mabay/Miles Inc.
My mother, Grace Darling (Clifton) Spurlock, died from a stroke, My
father, Paul Oliver Spurlock was also born in Versailles, Missouri.
