James J. Anderson was born 7 Apr 1850 according to his tombstone. His birth surname appears to have been Burchett. The 1850 census for Franklin County VA lists him as residing in the Franklin County poorhouse. He is also listed in the Overseers report as a resident of the poorhouse until about 1855.) The Franklin County, VA Court Order Book 10 (1855-1860), page 55, confirms that this James Burchett in the poor house was one in the same as James J. Anderson. At the April 1856 court, the following entry was recorded: "On the motion of James Anderson by his attorney, it is ordered that one of the Overseers of the Poor of this county do bind to the said James Anderson, James J. Burchett aged 7 years, the said Anderson not to pay the said Burchett any thing at the expiration of his service but to give the said Burchett such an edjucation [sic] as the law directs."
