ARNOT (also found as ARNOTT) is a name that dates back many centuries.
Some confusion surrounds the original origin of this surname, as some believe it
to be French and others Scottish. There are two main beliefs though that link
this name almost entirely to Scotland. The first is that the name was brought
from France to Scotland in the eleventh century by the Norman invaders. The other
belief is that ARNOT is a surname derived from the place where an original bearer
lived (Arnot being the name of lands in Scotland). Either way, the name ARNOT
has been identified with Scotland for many centuries and any link to France has been lost.
This site contains only a single branch of the ARNOT family tree dating back to the early 1800's in England.
Did you know? The ARNOT name is the 21,085th most common surname in the United States.
